Summer Running Essentials We Never Leave Home Without

Summer Running Essentials We Never Leave Home Without

Ian Campbell | July 16, 2026

Summer running has its rewards. The longer days, sunrise (or glowing sunset) miles, and fall race season is just around the corner. But warmer temperatures and higher humidity also mean it's more important than ever to be prepared before you head out the door.

At Philadelphia Runner, our team spends plenty of time logging miles through every season - including the sweaty days of summer. While everyone's gear preferences are a little different, there are a few essentials we rarely leave home without.

Hydration

If there's one thing that changes during summer running, it's how much you sweat. Staying hydrated before, during, and after your run can make a huge difference in both performance and recovery. Depending on your run, that might mean carrying a handheld bottle, wearing a hydration vest, or planning a route with water fountains along the way. For longer efforts, adding electrolytes like Tailwind or Nuun can help replace what you lose through sweat and keep you feeling strong.

Technical Apparel

Cotton and summer running don't mix. Lightweight, moisture wicking shirts, shorts, and socks help move sweat away from your skin, keeping you cooler and reducing the chance of chafing. Breathable fabrics also dry quickly, making even hot and humid Philly mornings a little more comfortable. The less you have to think about your clothing during a run, the better.

Sunglasses

A good(r) pair of running sunglasses does more than block the sun. They reduce glare, protect your eyes from UV rays, and help shield against wind, bugs, and dust. Look for lightweight frames with lenses that stay put even when you're sweating like our selection of frames from Goodr. Once you've run with a good pair, it's hard to imagine heading out without them - especially with all of the fun colors and options we have!

A Hat or Visor

Keeping the sun off your face can make a noticeable difference during hot runs. Running hats and visors help shade your eyes, wick away sweat, and can even be soaked with water before a run for a little extra cooling. They're especially helpful on long runs when shade is hard to find.

Body Glide - Anti Chafe

Heat, humidity, and longer runs can quickly turn a small irritation into a painful one. A stick of anti chafe balm like Bodyglide takes just a few seconds to apply and can prevent discomfort on your feet, thighs, underarms, sports bra lines, or anywhere clothing creates friction. Trust us - it's worth it.

The Right Shoes

Summer often means higher mileage, race training, and longer runs, making your shoes more important than ever. Whether you prefer a highly cushioned trainer, a lightweight daily shoe, or something built for speed, wearing a shoe that fits your needs and training goals can make every mile more enjoyable. If you're not sure whether it's time for a new pair, stop by one of our stores. Our fit specialists can help you find the right shoe for your running style and make sure you're set for the rest of the season.

Recovery Fuel

Your run doesn't end when your watch stops. Refueling with water, electrolytes, and a snack containing carbohydrates and protein helps your body recover so you're ready for your next workout. It's an easy habit that pays off throughout the summer.

Don't Forget the Little Things

Some of the smallest items can have the biggest impact:

  • Running belt or vest for carrying essentials
  • Garmin GPS watch or phone for tracking your run
  • Lightweight headphones if you enjoy music or podcasts
  • Sunscreen and lip balm with SPF
  • Change of clothes, extra pair of dry socks or recovery sandals waiting in the car

Ready for Summer Miles

The best summer running gear isn't about carrying more - it's about bringing the items that help you stay comfortable, safe, and ready to enjoy every mile. Having the right essentials makes all the difference! Need help building your summer running kit? Stop by any Philadelphia Runner location or shop online. Our team is always happy to help you find the gear that keeps you moving all season long.
